Caring for Cast Iron Products

Here are a few tips:
Seasoned Cast Iron is coated with a soy-based vegetable oil and baked at temperatures high enough for the oil to penetrate the iron. This creates the characteristic black patina finish. To use, apply a thin layer of vegetable oil before cooking and pre-heat on low heat.
Remember that very cold foods are more likely to stick in the pan, so be sure to thaw frozen foods thoroughly before cooking. If you use the cast-iron skillets for cooking in the oven, the handles are likely to be hot, so use a heat pad when removing the pan from the oven.
Clean your pan using hot water and a stiff nylon brush. Soap with harsh detergents and immersing hot skillets in cold water can damage cast iron. If some food is stuck on the bottom of the pan, boil water in the bottom of the skillet for a few minutes to make it easier to remove. Towel dry the cast-iron cookware promptly to avoid rusting and apply a light coating of oil while it is warm. Store in a cool, dry place.
Enamel Cast Iron works well with most stovetop surfaces and in the oven but should not be used in the microwave, over a grill or with an open flame. Use over a burner that best matches the size of the cookware to allow for good heat distribution. Cookware with black matte enamel, such as the Lodge Enamel Skillet and Roaster, should be coated with vegetable oil before cooking to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. Sliding enamel cast iron across a ceramic or glass surface can cause damage; you should always lift to move. If any parts become loose, tighten as necessary but be careful not to over-tighten. Be careful to avoid temperatures over 400 degrees.
Allow cookware to cool before washing. Warm water with mild soap is best for cleaning. Use plastic or nylon scouring pads and dry promptly. Persistent stains can be removed by soaking cookware in a solution of 1 teaspoon bleach to each 1 pint water. If food sticks to the bottom of the pan and becomes baked on, you can boil water in bottom of the pan to loosen it for cleaning.
Stainless Steel Handles can be found on many of Lodge’s products. They can be cleaned using a cloth or nylon wool scrubber. Avoid steel cleaners. Dry promptly. If you notice a gold color on the handle, it may have been overheated and the damage can be removed with a stainless steel cleaner.
